My Experiences with Bullies

By Melissa, age 13, allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts, and tree nuts

Throughout my life, I have had many experiences with bullies and people who just don’t understand my food allergies. I always try my best not to let what people say get to me, because I know that I have no control over my allergies. Now that I am older, people don’t bother me as much about my allergies. They just say something like “it must [stink] that you’re allergic to everything.” Things like that don’t bother me very much. People were ruder to me when I was younger and in elementary school.

For example, once, in second grade, my friend had a carton of chocolate milk in her lunch. When she finished it, she asked if she could pour it on my head, so clearly I said no. She explained that it didn’t matter since it was empty. Then she tried to prove to me that it would be okay by pouring it on herself. When she did that a few drops of milk came out. It hurt my feelings that she would try to do that to me, but she really didn’t think that it could harm me. I was glad that I didn’t let her hold it upside down over my head.

One time at lunch in third grade, a guy in my class was trying to put his French toast right in front of my face. He thought that it didn’t matter if it was near me, and all that mattered was if I swallowed it. When other kids in my class saw what he was doing, they started yelling at him to stop. It made me feel good that other kids were defending me. After that day, he never did anything like that again.

Now that I’m older, when people make a rude comment to me about my allergies, I usually ignore it. When they tell me how unlucky I am to not be able to eat certain foods, I just reply that I’ve had my allergies my whole life.
